Charles the Humble Technician shows how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is located at the top of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a message to the ECU through the grey wire T55/49 and then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located at the edges of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then uses this information to control the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends a signal to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to link with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and the location of the camshaft so it can start spark and injectors in the right way.

If this sensor fails, audikey the ECU will display the P00160 error, which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft aren't in sync, possibly indicating the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper timing chain. The code will not appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing is a bit challenging since there are two connector pins and they serve different purposes but the most effective way to test it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read approximately 1000 ohms if the sensor is at full operation. If you are having problems with this component, look for evidence of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating from the highway paytoll at full speed, i noticed a huge decrease in power. It was like the engine was running out of gas. Or, my injectors were not firing. I took out the spark plugs this morning, 3 were drenched in gasoline and the fourth was dry. I put tissue over each hole in the injector and when I start the engine without sparks, the 3 with gazoline jump right out. The 4th one remains closed. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 I got zero Ohm. Therefore, i think the issue is in another place.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start if the G28 is not plugged in and runs fine when it is connected but it still has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even when it is unplugged, shows temperatures of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars when the actual pressure is 0.

I'm not sure what to do. I think I've eliminated everything else. But i'm worried that I may have missed something. Please let me know should you have any suggestions! TIA!

The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal sent by the RPM sensor. The GM-style sensor is identical to the G4 and both are used in the 80 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a wrecking yard or at a parts store. It is easy to test them: simply put your DMM into resistance mode and determine the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector end facing upwards). They should be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that must know the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make a decision about timing of the fuel injectors, etc. In order to do this it utilizes a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these go bad you will get codes on the diagnostic scanner that could cause engine shut down.

A failing G28 sensor can cause an inaccurate speed counter for the gearbox and a gearbox which shifts more quickly than normal, or an unfire when in the gear. If you are experiencing any of these issues it is most likely that your sensor is failing and requires replacement audi key. They're inexpensive and easy to locate, especially if they're a Bosch model like ours. Alternatively, the GM version of this component is also a great option.

5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine speed sensor could be the reason behind a slew of issues in your car.
