The results showed that on average, the CLKs resisted the pragmatic norms of native speakers in more than 40% of their answers. They did so even though they could create patterns that resembled native ones. Furthermore, they were clearly aware of their pragmatic resistance. They attributed their actions to learner-internal factors such as their personalities and identities that are multilingual, as well as ongoing lives. They also mentioned external factors, such as relational advantages. For instance, they discussed how their relationships with professors led to an easier performance with respect to the intercultural and linguistic standards of their university.

However, the interviewees also expressed concern about the social pressures and penalties that they could be subjected to if they strayed from their local social norms.
